Description
Why use attenuators?
The ability of any fiber optic system to transmit data is ultimately dependent on the optical power measured at the receiver.
As a general rule of thumb, multimode systems do not need attenuators, because multimode sources rarely have enough power output to saturate receivers.
Singlemode systems, especially on short links, often have too much power and therefore need attenuators. Too much power and the receiver equipment amplifier saturates, too little power and noise becomes a problem as it interferes with the signal.
Fiber optic attenuators are thus used to adjust the optical power to the desired level. The attenuators are divided into fixed and variable. The attenuation values for the fixes range from 1 dB to 20 dB, in 1 dB increments. Frog Engineering attenuators are distinguished by their high power resistance and low back reflection, making them suitable for high speed digital transmission and simulation applications.
Available in single mode and multimode, type FC, SC, ST, LC and MU
